Short: Holy Forest | Dir. Stella Nostos & Elaine Castillo| UK | 5 min
A neglected underground classic, only digitised from 16mm last year, charts the multi-faceted life of Mexican actress Lupe Vélez. Puerto Rican director Soltero was a significant part of the New York underground film movement and of creating new queer aesthetics that influenced later and better known film directors. Here Lupe’s times of sex work, Hollywood stardom, crushing romance, suicide and ascension to the spirit world are portrayed in a gorgeous colour saturated dime-store baroque. All accompanied by an eclectic soundtrack that includes Cuban boleros, the Supremes, Vivaldi, Elvis and Spanish flamenco.

Flow | Dir. Yau Ching | China | 1993 | 38 min 40
This experimental documentary uses the life stories of a Chinese woman artist to explore alternatives to dominant versions of history. Growing up in China during the Cultural Revolution, she first came to the U.S. to study, and then, after the government crackdown, to live. FLOW’s narratives of the Cultural Revolution are constructed from her extremely personal and often satirical points of view. Yau Ching writes, ” Her memory haunts her and blocks her from being assimilated by the dominant American society. She lives in this ‘between-world dilemma,’ deprived of the privileges of being fully identified either as a native or as a westerner.”

This film shows playful sides to her, capturing her laughter and times with her partner, as well as revealing her more of her political insights and anger at oppression.
Berlinherosurban: work in progress- experimental documentation of public intervention on street signs in berlin – the names of celebrated colononisers were replaced with names of afro-german artists/activist who lived between the 1930-70s.

The Aggressives | Dir. Daniel Peddle | USA | 2005 | 75 min
Documentary shot over five years following six young women of New York who identify as aggressives, which like all queer identities defies easy categorisation: masculine, tough, something of the boi, butch, some pass as male, others as high femme by day…All of them have relation or involvement with the predominantly black ballroom scene. Some of them walk the runway, offering up construction worker realness and taking home trophies. Though often life isn’t easy for young queer women of colour they carry themselves with dignity.

For Chinese parents, finding out that their kid is gay usually presents a major tragedy, with the big majority utterly unable to accept the homosexuality of their son or daughter. However, during recent years a fresh rainbow wind has been blowing over the Chinese mainland: a pioneer generation of Chinese parents has been stepping up and speaking out on their love for their gay kids.
This documentary features six mothers from all over China, who talk openly and freely about their experiences with their homosexual children. With their love, they are giving a whole new definition to Chinese-style family bonds.

Red Lips (Cages for Black girls): black. queer. sexy. slut. cherry. red. locked up. locked down. black. whore. red lips. justice explores black/racialized/criminalized/queer/trans/ identity and its relationship to the prison industrial complex. It articulates links between interpersonal and systemic violence- while celebrating the (sexy) ways in which we survive and celebrate ourselves.
